薛海是公路站副站長，他臨危受命到一個貧困的山村(醬子村)做第一書記，因 為自己的兢兢業業受到了當地老百姓的愛戴。然而“村村通”公路施工隊老板， 認為薛海嚴格把關道路質量，導致自己無利可圖，便心生一計，以潑臟水的手 段害的薛海被停了職。后來幸虧得上級部門的明察秋毫，最終還了薛海同志的 清白，同時，醬子村的所有村民們也在請愿書上簽了字，并按上了紅手印，希望 他們可親可敬的薛書記還能回到村里工作! 如愿再次回到醬子村的薛書記，依舊是忘我的工作，可是天有不測風云，他因 勞累過度，最終倒在了工作崗位上，大家痛心疾首，他們紛紛來到追悼會，懷著 悲痛的心情送薛書記最后一程。
