金發女郎瑪麗一直夢想做個演員，拋夫棄子到大城市追尋明星夢。她的丈夫科夫尋找到這個城市，苦勸她能夠回歸家庭盡母親的責任，瑪麗一心想的還是城市的耀眼和繁華，她趁機擺脫了科夫。第二天，科夫接到警方的消息，瑪麗被謀殺了，瑪麗的死亡種種跡象表明與好萊塢落魄的小導演內威克有關，內威克一直宣傳自己的特級效果，將是震撼驚心的。科夫為尋求真相，又遇見和自己妻子同樣有著金發的美麗姑娘，這姑娘即將成為內威克新任女主角。究竟誰殺了瑪麗，小導演秘而不宣的特級效果又是什么......
